This new adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ is for voices, period instruments and magic lantern.
L to R: John Banister, Thomas Linley, John C Smith, Michael Nyman,
Charlie Barber, John Weldon, Matthew Locke, Henry Purcell
Featuring British music from the baroque period alongside works by contemporary composers, the performance also explores the play’s themes of magic and theatrical illusion through music, visual art and magic lantern.
With music by Henry Purcell, Matthew Locke, Thomas Linley, Michael Nyman and Charlie Barber, the performance concentrates on atmosphere rather than narrative although Ariel’s songs will be featured.
Musicians include countertenor Matthew Venner (Orlando Consort), violists Sam Stadlen (Fretwork) and Ibi Aziz (Rose Consort of Viols) and harpsichordist Jane Chapman performing with an ensemble also featuring baroque oboe, sackbut and violone.
The performance lasts 60 minutes (without interval) and is continuous.
